Attached Victorian and Federation terraces, semis and workers cottages. Box gutters between brick parapets, shared party-wall flashings, genuine slate on the older stock, original chimney stacks, and no side access to speak of.

Detached homes on real blocks, with eaves, deep verandahs, terracotta and concrete tile, complicated hips and valleys, and prominent street-facing gables. Heritage conservation controls are common here.

The Cooks River and post-war south

Inter-war bungalows and post-war brick on the ridges and slopes above the river, with heavy leaf load off established street trees and a lot of tiled hip roofs.

Five councils, five sets of controls

These 29 suburbs are not one local government area, and that matters when a roof is being replaced rather than patched.

• Inner West Council — Inner West LEP 2022. Haberfield is conservation area C54, with additional built-form controls under clause 6.20 and detailed guidance in Chapter E2 of the Comprehensive Inner West DCP 2016. Iron Cove (C26) and Gads Hill (C40) are among the other listed areas.
• Burwood Council — conservation areas in Schedule 5 of the Burwood LEP 2012, including the Appian Way area, Malvern Hill and Rostherne Avenue at Croydon.
• Strathfield Council — around 17 conservation areas under Schedule 5 of the Strathfield LEP 2012; the council DCP notes Federation Queen Anne as the dominant character of the Churchill Avenue, Homebush Road and Redmyre Road areas.
• City of Canada Bay — Concord, Five Dock and Drummoyne, with roughly 20 conservation areas under Schedule 5 of the Canada Bay LEP 2013.
• Canterbury-Bankstown Council — CBC LEP 2023; the suburb of Hurlstone Park alone contains six conservation areas.

Several suburbs straddle a boundary, so the controls can change from one side of a street to the other. We check your address rather than assuming.
