Cottages, terraces and converted industrial buildings

Camperdown sits between Parramatta Road, the Royal Prince Alfred and university precinct around Mallett Street, and Camperdown Memorial Rest Park on the Newtown side. The residential streets off Australia Street are rows of single-fronted workers cottages and small terraces, mostly single and two storey, all attached.

There is also a significant stock of former industrial and warehouse buildings converted to apartments and studios, and those roofs behave nothing like a cottage.

Two very different roof problems

The cottages and terraces. Parapets, box gutters between houses, one downpipe, shared flashings. The leak is nearly always at the sump or the party-wall junction rather than in the covering. Slate still appears on the older rows, slipping where the original iron nails have corroded. Box gutter work and leak repairs handle these.

The warehouse conversions. Large low-pitch sheet roofs with long internal box gutters draining a big catchment through a handful of outlets. The consequences of a blockage are proportionally larger, because the volume arriving is larger. These need the drainage sized against what the roof actually collects — a 200 mm box gutter base cannot carry much more than about 10.5 litres per second, so catchment area is the controlling number.

Strata and shared roofs

A lot of Camperdown roofing sits under strata, which changes the process rather than the work. A written, itemised quote and a documented roof inspection report are usually what a committee needs before approving anything, and both can be prepared.
